Growth With a growth rate of 6%, Washington County's 2006 populaton of 130,000 is projected to nearly double in the next 14 years to 250,000. Growth is occurring primarily via in-migration from outside areas, representing people from all 50 states. Nonetheless, the majority arrive from northern Utah, California and Nevada. |

History Southern Utah was originally inhabited by Anasazi Indian tribes, which were replaced by Paiute tribes around 1200 AD. Mormon pioneers began settling in 1854, creating the towns of St. George, Hurricane, Santa Clara, Toquerville and the surrounding communities. With only a few thousand residents, the county remained quiet until being discovered again in the 1990's by the upcoming generation of retirees seeking the natural beauty and warm climate. |
